JIMMY CLIFF (Jam/Uk)
Greetings to everyone ,my name is Jimmy Cliff, actor, music innovator,
singer, songwriter, music producer, "Artivist", businessman, and much
more... I took on to myself that name with the intension of establishing
myself thoughout this Planet, as high as the Cliff's of Adelphi Land where
I was told I was born which seemed like the highest peak on the Earth to
me as a child. Adelphi Land is a village in the District of Somerton in
the parish of St James Jamaica an Island in the Caribbean sea. That
mission of establishing myself is more then half way there.
My parents named me James Chambers at birth and today they remain my hero
and "Shero". I was making music from the day I came out of my mothers
woomb and said "AAAH" and I was acting since I can remember I could walk
and laugh like my mother. People would pay me to do that so acting is what
I loved to do most and even today I think I am better at that than
singing/songwriting. I discovered I had a very unique voice in primary
school and at the Pentacostal Church my family went to.
When the political landscape was changing in Jamaica as the Island had
became independent from Britain, so the music was up beat expressing the
spirit of the people to this change hence we got Ska an uptempo upbeat
rhythm.

JALEX (Gam)
Malang Touray, aka Jalex, was born in the town of Bakau, in the Gambia.
The Grandson of a famous Griot, Jali Foday, he has been inspired by music
since his early childhood - an inspiration that came from his
grandfather's great work as a cultural musician. Jalex has evolved his
own, very distinctive style of music, which he titles "Afro-Afric". The
first single came back in 1997. Entitled Afrika Kairo (Peace in Africa),
his first track made comment on the state of Africa at the time, and
called on all Africans to open there eyes, and see what the constant
fighting and unrest is doing to such a beautiful continent.A brief spell
as a member of a band, Dextrous Squad, followed, but was not long lived.
The band split, but Jalex continued to develop his musical style and
songwriting skills over the next few years, performing as a solo
artist. The release of Kana Kideh, on video clip, led to regular plays on
GRTS, on shows such as Goudi Samdi. A chance meeting in February 2006
brought Jalex together with Gary Jones, a British national, and the
sponsorship that such a talented artist deserved had been found. First a
website was developed, then the recording of the album, followed by
production of CD's in the UK, and the recent video clip for Duniyaa. The
success of Kana Kideh has been repeated, and this clip too is played
regularly on GRTS. Gary is now Jalex's Manager, and working hard to ensure
Jalex's music can each as wide an audience as possibel. The new Hit Album
"Soma Alfaa" was released in the Gambia in February 2007, to wide acclaim
on TV and Radio in the Gambia. In March 2007, Jalex's song "Nmala Moola
Bi" was voted the winner of West Coast Radio's "Smiling Coast Riddim"
competition, by the station's listeners during the on air vote, beating
songs by a line up of Gambia's finest talents of today, such as Njie B,

Friday 6th of June;
RAI KUNG CHEB KHALED
at Folkets park malmö
tecken blir det i Folkets Park fredagen den 6 juni med kungen av Rai;
KHALED!
700.000 exemplar enbart i Frankrike (Danska hiphopgruppen Outlandish

Harder They Come med Jimmy Cliff i huvudrollen.
bjudit in vokalisterna Million Styles och Junior Eric.

Sveriges största hip-hop gala, The Swedish Hip-Hop Awards.

?spittin on my name? under namnet Abztrazt (1995) och ?I need your love?

beats that had an impact on the listener. In 1990 Reza invested all his
money to start his notoriously massive record collection. He purchased
almost every genre of sound from rock, hip-hop to soul. One year later, he
started spinning housey soul-funk hip-hop which earned him a residency by
the age16 at an illegal club named Funk House in Gothenburg Sweden. In
the mid-90's, Reza started a buzz which he then traveled throughout
Scandinavia playing at clubs. In 1997 he moved back to Malmö and opened
Street Records shop that focused mainly on dance and urban style music. At
this time he went into the studio and started producing with old friends.
Reza then closed his shop and worked at Folk Rock (south Sweden's best
record store); focused only on Djíng and found his talent as a promoter as
well. Over the years that followed till the present, he has been and still
is responsible for a majority of south Sweden's biggest and most important
happenings in dance and urban music history

The CD continues to be popular in the Gambia. Jalex has recorded a

Reggaewarriors presents LIVE;
fri.14th of March
@ Tangopalatset-Malmö
COLLIE BUDDZ, NEW KIGSTON BAND and PEE-WEE
ABOUT COLLIE BUDDZ(US/Bermuda):
Support:
MEDINA
Born in New Orleans, raised on the isle of Bermuda with intermittent stays
in urban Toronto, Colin Harper is not an easy youth to pin down
geographically. His musical alter ego Collie Buddz however, is one of the
most firmly grounded voices you may ever encounter. Incorporating
influences from hip-hop to soca, Collie’s music nevertheless has a
rock-solid foundation in reggae - and its power to connect ghetto reality
with the highest heights of human aspiration - that is a rarity even in
Jamaica.
Born in 1981, at the dawn of the turbulent era signaled by the twin omens
of Bob Marley’s passing and Ronald Reagan’s election, Collie was immersed
in the sound system culture of Bermuda aka “The Rock” since the age of 6.
“I used to come home from primary school and my brother would always be on
the turntables, playin his new 45's an' I'd just be there vibesin'.” The
evolution of dancehall and sound-clash culture into a movement of it’s own
in the late 80s and early 90s set the backdrop for young Collie’s
discovery of his own sonic identity, and the dancehall kings of that
generation - Buju Banton, Bounty Killer and Beenie Man served as his
primary influences. “Back when Beenie and Bounty used to war lyrically,
seeing clashes wit’ Kilimanjaro an all the sound-man an’ everyt’ing…the
whole music scene for me took on a new meaning. Clash thing an’ lyrical
war became a part of my daily life from early out.”
The daily operation of trading lyrics in schoolyard clashes quickly gave
way to more serious combat as “…people startin sayin ‘Ay, Buddz got some
lyrics!’ From an early age, some of the local sounds on the island wanted
to get me on dubplate,” says Collie, who stepped into the first of many
vocal booths at age 16 to voice customized dubs for some Bermudian sounds.
"Sounds was always trying to buss local artists in Bermuda.” Consistent
encouragement from the various soundmen and engineers he encountered on
those dub excursions led Collie to maintain a musical focus and eventually
trek to Florida for a degree in audio engineering, a path that ended
behind the boards of his own Bermudian studio, jointly run with his older
brother (Smokey) and Sneek Success from one of Bermuda's founding sounds,
'Newclear Weapon'. Building riddims for other artists only expanded his
love for writing and voicing his own lyrics however. “I used to make these
beats an’ none of the tunes came out how I pictured an artist sittin’ on
de riddim, so I decided to start to get in the booth myself again and spit
some lyrics. Unless my brother engineerin’ for me, I’m runnin from the
board to the booth, back to the board!” Like boot camp for a one-man army,
that experience molded the signature vocal style that defines Collie Buddz
- a songwriter who can lay his own riddim, sing the hook and chat on the
verse. “I build de riddim first and while I’m building it I don’t try an’
think about lyrics ‘cause I'm tryin' to focus on the riddim, yunno? I make
it sound as best I can and then for a day or two I rest my ears then start
de writing process. I come up wif a melody firs’ and get that down, then
start with the lyrics.” The skill with which he compartmentalizes multiple
roles in the studio also extends to his easy movement between styles.
A falsetto that combines the singsong lover’s rock appeal of a carnival
crooner like Rupee with the deeper emotional catch of Bob Marley or
Sizzla, Collie’s voice sits with equal comfort over the jump-up pace of
ragga-soca, 4/4 hip-hop beats or an achingly slow one drop. Most
strikingly on tunes like “My Everything” he finds both the drive of
dancehall and the bluesy edge of roots in a frenetic polyrhythm built
around the Latin horns of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” an up-tempo track
that could be just as home in a Trinidad carnival as a UK discothèque.
“Some tunes I create are just to show that I could do anything I put my
mind to,” he explains “to show the versatility of my style.” For many
artists such versatility can be a curse and only a select few can maintain
a distinctive voice when so many styles come so easy. But on tracks like
“Moving On,” the layers of competing influences seem less like
contradictions and more like necessary stages in the development of a
larger persona, something like the succession of roles from pimp, to
preacher, to something like a revolutionary that formed Malcolm X. Instead
of pulling the song apart, the warring elements are all somehow essential
to a larger vision reflected in his lyrics: “Feel like me cyan move an’
trap in a cage / still searchin’ for the words to put ‘pon the page…” It’s
that discovery of timeless roots even within the sweatiest dancehall track
that marks the culmination of Collie’s growth.
“Nowadays when I go to put on a CD, its old tune: Alton Ellis, The
Meditations, The Heptones, Skatalites, Jacob Miller, Eric Monty Morris;
love the rockers music. From that I start to teach myself some of the
history of this music, that’s where I started to come a little more
versatile with the singin’…the foundation just straight reality, yunno. I
like dancehall, but de foundation and conscious tune really what me love.”

Kulturbolaget & Reggaewarriors present LIVE:
SEAN KINGSTONE (Jam/US)
Monday 25th of februari
Sean Kingston, the 17 year-old Miami born, Jamaica bred artist, is not
just a new face in popular music; he's accomplished the rare task of
creating a new genre where rap, reggae, pop, doo-wop and remarkable
songwriting all combine into something totally refreshing. Add in Sean's
family roots, which cite Jamaican legendary producer Jack Ruby as his
grandfather, and you have one of the most exciting debuts this year. And
while hip-hop lyrics have sparked the biggest debate in years, Sean finds
himself in the center of the controversy - but not where you might think.
The teen prefers to show his creativity without using profanity.
It's no wonder then that Sean is quickly becoming a household name with
his first single “Beautiful Girls,” a song cross-pollinating on both urban
and pop radio stations coast to coast. The unmistakable hit boasts the
instant hook of “Stand by Me” which acts like a muse for the song produced
by savant J.R. Rotem. Sean, who is the flagship artist on J.R.'s label
Beluga Heights, will release his debut album Sean Kingston on July 31 via
Beluga Heights/Epic.
“I heard the track ‘Stand By Me,' one night in the studio while listening
to the radio and asked J.R. if anyone had ever used that sample. He made
the beat immediately and I wrote down the lyrics within an hour – it
happened very quickly. I loved the way it turned out and I think my sound
is a lot different than what else is out there. It all just worked and we
knew we had something special with the track. I'm also singing about
something people can relate to – I'm singing about being in love with
someone who you think is your world but they don't see it that way and you
have to end the relationship.”
Kingston wants to make it clear that he is no cookie cutter artist that
has the songs mapped out for him - he comes up with 100 percent of his
lyrics. Sean also understands that as a 17 year-old making urban music he
has a responsibility to fans, “With this album I thought it was important
to not use curse words or negative language that might offend people. I
write my own songs so it's like if I can write a great track without using
those words, then that's the style for me.” Sean continues, “As an artist,
my whole goal is to make powerful and classic album. I want everyone to
feel my music and understand my heritage and that's what this album will
do. The music is all about the authentic Sean Kingston vibe. J.R. is a
talented dude and a dope producer and he heard that I had something
different to offer from other artists out there. Together we're a powerful
force and I'm ready to share it with the world.”
Sean talks about J.R. more like a big brother, rather than an Executive
Producer of his album. Last spring Sean reached out to J.R. on MySpace.
Sean was drawn to J.R. because he was young and hungry like himself and
felt like the music he was making was the type of music for him. Rotem
emailed him back. J.R. almost had no choice. “Sean would hit me up at
least three times a day!” J.R. says.
“He had a real distinct sound,” Rotem remembers. “I worked with some of
the best and I don't see why Sean can't grow to be one of them. His
potential is limitless.” Rotem invited Sean for a meeting in Los Angeles;
coincidentally the young performer was already in the process of moving to
California. Shortly after their initial meeting, Rotem had his flagship
artist for his Epic records joint venture, Beluga Heights. For Sean, it
was a prophecy beginning to be fulfilled. Not only is music his love, it
is in his blood. Now Kingston says he's looking forward to making timeless
music and living out his dream.
In just a short time, Kingston has already done what few in his age
bracket can accomplish - get people excited about music again. His album
is shaping up to be filled with a string of hits including the second
single “Me Love,” “Got No Shorty,” “There's Nothin,” “I Can Feel It” and
“Take You There.”
Perhaps one of the most eye opening tracks is “Dry Your Eyes” where Sean
visits the hardship of watching his mother and sister be sent to prison
when he was just 15 years-old. He sings to his mother and tells her not to
be saddened that she's away from the family and to know that they're
always there for her.
“I always had my brother,” he began to explain. “But when my mother and
sister went away, it took a lot out of me. My sister went away for four
months and my mom has been away for over a year now. When she went away, I
thought to myself, this is too much.' I was only 14. I missed her like
crazy but I pulled through and used it as my motivation. “Dry Your Eyes”
is a defining song on the album for me because it touches on something
that's very personal to me and the dope melody that's on there makes me
feel even closer to it.
”
Sean has a certified hip-hop knocker on his hands with the reggae remix of
“Colors” (Reggae Remix) which features the legendary Vybz Kartel and the
always profound Kardinal Offishall. The track, which was released this
past Spring, was received really well by the industry as a first look from
Sean and will appear on his album as a bonus track. “Unity and
representation is where Colors came from,” Kingston elaborated. “The song
is about representing whatever flag that you're loyal to – whether it is
Jamaica, the States, your block etc. It's a lifestyle record that can be a
street anthem no matter where you're from and where you at now. The reggae
version came up because I wanted to do something special for my roots in
Jamaica. The first person I thought of was Vybz Kartel. His verse came out
crazy. Then Kardinal, that's my homie, really attacked the track.”
“In the future I want to have my own label and work on the business side,”
he said. “I went to acting school when I was younger, so I want to revisit
that one day. I want to get into every aspect of the business and see
where it takes me. I'm grateful for the fact that my music is able to
bridge genres – I'm ready to do that will any business opportunity that
comes my way – it's always been important to for me not to limit myself.”

The Abyssinians & Black Uhuru
Måndag 26 november
The Abyssinians (JAM)
www.theabyssinians.com
Black Uhuru (JAM)

Singer Coco Tea (or Cocoa Tea as his stage name is often spelled) is a familiar name to the reggae massive in Jamaica and abroad as he has managed to establish his name in the forefront of conscious reggae music since he first recorded for the "Little Willie" label in the seventies.
Coco Tea was born Calvin Scott in the fishing village of Rocky Point, Clarendon JA, on September 3, 1959. He was also raised in this rural parish, which has produced its fair share of reggae talent as renown reggae artists such as Freddie McGregor, Barrington Levy, Toots Hibbert and Everton Blender were all born here too. Although one might expect that young Coco Tea had a love for the sea like most of the men in his village, he was more interested in music and thoroughbred racing at Caymanas Park. In those days he grew up listening to John Holt, Dennis Brown, Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer. Of course, "The King Of Reggae" Bob Marley belongs to his early influences, but Bunny Wailer was definitely one of Coco Tea's strongest influences... "because of the way Jah Bunny always focused on the music itself, infusing it with passion, using it as a tool to reach people." Still a teenager he recorded his first song, "Searching In The Hills", in 1974. The single was far from successful and he took his mind off the music business for a while. The next 5 years Cocoa Tea first worked as a race horse jockey, and then as a fisherman. However, he returned to his musical pursuits and started testing his lyrics on the various sound systems that came to play in his area. His success in the dancehalls strengthened his purpose and encouraged him to go further, so he began writing songs and training his voice. In 1983, two months after an impressive performance at a dance, Coco Tea moved from the countryside to the big city of Kingston. "Life was the same because when you move you only go to a different place but it is still you," states Coco Tea when answering the question... "How did you experience your move from a rural area to Kingston?".

SIZZLA KALONJI +
X-TERMINATOR Band (Jam) sunday 10th
of June
When the name Sizzla Kalonji is mentioned in Reggae circles, it provokes
an extreme response in all those present. Indeed, all who are not
present but are familiar with Sizzla's prolific work nonetheless would
be equally subject to that said extreme response if they should be
present. That is the mark of a truly innovative individual whose name
will undoubtedly stand the test of time due to the fact that the responses
evoked by Sizzla's name and his music are of no consequence. The sole
fact that the responses are extreme is the only issue at hand because
that in itself signifies Sizzla's power to affect the reggae loving
masses positively or negatively in a very potent way. Even those who
are turned off by his message will have to admit that Sizzla is truly
a gifted artist at the very least. On the other hand, those who are
positively inspired by his music will claim that he is the "King of
Reggae." www.sizzlakalonjiinc.com
